Danza propia explores touch, memory and intergenerational transmission through the lives of Pilar Rodríguez Vergara, a reflexologist, and Rosa Carballo, a nonagenarian retired shopkeeper, both based in rural Galicia, Spain. Through body and word, they share with each other their “touch biographies,” a concept used by Finnish anthropologist Taina Kinnunen, consisting of intimate stories in which people narrate how they experienced touch throughout their lives and how they were socialized around it. The film moves between direct conversation and poetic readings. Their life narratives are translated into tangible materials (wax falling onto the core of an apple, electricity shimmering in a water well...), poetic signs woven throughout the work that extend body and memory, connecting the intimate with the universal. Danza propia seeks to speak about human material, the family, the ancestral and the practice of care.
